The national parks of East Macedonia and Thrace (8 days)
A fascinating nature tour in North-Eastern Greece

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN THESSALONIKI
After we have completed our passport control obligations we will be transferred by our private motorcoach to our hotel. Overnight in 4* hotel.

Day 2: THESSALONIKI
Morning visit of downtown Thessaloniki. We’ll see the seaside medieval fortification called the White Tower, the Arch of Roman emperor Galerius, the medieval churches on Via Egnatia, all protected by UNESCO and the archaeological museum. Rest of the day free at leisure for shopping, or watching the gorgeous sunset in a café on the seaside. Overnight in 4* hotel.

Day 3: THESSALONIKI & KERKINI LAKE
Morning transfer to Kerkini lake, a 2 hours’ drive away. A slow tour around the lake and vicinity will take us the whole day. There is so much to see, especially if we hike on the embankment by the White or Dalmatian Pelicans and Squacco Herons, near the dam - for it is an artificial lake - with the Glossy Ibises and Purple Herons, and on the banks of Strimonas River with the water buffaloes – a rare site in Europe, where the Black and White Storks, Spoonbills, and Egrets come for food. On the lake, we can see the patches of water lilies
where Whiskered and Black terns breed, near the more than 700 nests of the famous Cormorant colony. Overnight in 3* hotel in Kerkini.

Day 4: ALISTRATI,  PHILIPPI  &  XANTHI
Morning drive to Alistrati cave, one of the most spectacular in Southern Europe. Continue to Philippi, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Visit the ruins and the theatre.  Next is Xanthi, with a preserved historical center and lively young crowds. This is the ancient land of king Diomedes, whose wild horses were captured by Hercules. We’ll enjoy local food, in one of the many traditional restaurants of the old quarter. Overnight in 4* hotel.

Day 5: XANTHI & NESTOS VALLEY
Full day tour in the Nestos Valley, an excellent place for trekking and kayaking. We’ll trek along the river (about 5-6 hours) and weather permitting we’ll have the opportunity to kayak in the river’s waters in a breathtaking scenery. Return to Xanthi. Overnight in 4* hotel in Xanthi.

Day 6: XANTHI & DADIA NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, we will drive to Alexandroupolis, a 2 hours’ drive away. Continue to Dadia National Park and hike through the pine forests to observe the feeding of the rare vultures. This is an experience not to miss! Overnight in 3*hotel.

Day 7: DADIA & ALEXANDROUPOLIS
Morning visit to the small village of Fylakto to see the huge fossilized trees found in the nearby fields. We will head to ancient Mesimvria where the ruins are gently soaked by the waves of the sea. This is Cyclops’ land, where Ulysses beat the famous one-eyed giant. Back to Alexandroupolis and farewell dinner. Overnight in 4* hotel in Alexandroupolis.

Day 8: DEPARTURE
Transfer to the airport for our international flight.
